We Don't Paint Walls. We Make Landmarks.

From Budweiser to Netflix, Paintbox creates murals that stop people in their tracks. Brand activations, community commissions, private residences. If it needs a wall, we're in.

Shutter Art London | Hand-Painted Shop Shutters

Hand-painted shop shutter London Graffiti shutter art London

Your shutter is your shopfront for half the day. Most of them are grey, tagged, or both.

We hand-paint shutters for shops, cafés, bars and businesses across London. Every design is drawn for the specific shutter and the specific business, painted on site by working graffiti artists, and finished to survive weather and daily use.

25 shutters on Deptford High Street

We worked with Shapes Lewisham and Lewisham Council to transform 25 shutters along Deptford High Street, one for each business taking part. Iva Decheva redesigned the Shapes graphics and Zomby London painted a guest piece.

It's the largest shutter project of its kind in South East London, and it changed how the street looks after 6pm. See the project in our portfolio →

Why businesses paint their shutters

It stops the tagging. A painted shutter gets tagged far less than a blank one. Writers respect finished work, and what does land is easier to touch up.

It works when you're closed. Your shutter is visible every evening, every Sunday, every bank holiday. A blank one says nothing.

It gets photographed. Painted shutters end up on Instagram, in local press and on people's feeds.

It's cheaper than signage. A hand-painted shutter costs less than most illuminated signs and lasts years.

How it works

1. We look at the shutter. Size, condition, material, whether it's roller or solid. We can quote from photos if that's easier.

2. We draw something. You get a design mockup on a photo of your actual shutter before anyone picks up a can. Changes are included.

3. We paint it. Most single shutters are done in a day, painted overnight or on a closed day so your trading isn't affected.

4. It's sealed. We finish with an anti-graffiti and weather-resistant coat, so it can be cleaned without damaging the artwork.

What it costs

Tell us the width of your shutter and roughly what you have in mind, and we'll come back with a figure.

Where we work

We're based at 389 New Cross Road, London SE14 6LA, and paint shutters across London — Deptford, Peckham, Lewisham, Greenwich, Camberwell, Brixton, Hackney, Shoreditch and beyond. We also take on work outside London for larger projects.

Common questions

How long does a shutter take?
Most single shutters take a day. Larger or more detailed work can take two.

Will it get tagged?
Far less than a blank shutter. Painted work is generally left alone, and the anti-graffiti coat means anything that does appear can be cleaned off.

Do you need to close the shop?
No. We usually paint outside trading hours or on a day you're closed.

Can you match our branding?
Yes. We work from your logo, colours and any brand guidelines you have, and turn them into something that reads as artwork rather than an advert.

Do I need permission?
For your own shutter on your own unit, usually not. If you're in a conservation area or listed building, or the landlord owns the shopfront, we'll talk you through it.

Can a whole street do it together?
Yes, and it works out cheaper per shutter. That's how the Deptford project ran.
